I had a request to collect the Tamiya mixes for British WW2 colours, so here goes.   If you know of another combination and would like to see it added, please get in touch!

This list is organized by paint ID number.  I hope that is not confusing – it matches the order in the document by Mike Starmer and Mike Cooper, British Vehicle Camouflage, 1939-45.  The descriptions of the colours is taken from that document as well.

The following is an incomplete list, and I did not retain hyperlinks to the original discussions.  I will try to correct this in the future.

BS (British Service) Colours

  • 24 (Deep Bronze Green)
    • 8pts XF5 + 5pts XF62 “= Old dark colour. You need a satin varnish over this for the depth of colour.”
  • 28 (Silver Grey)
    • 7pts XF21 + 1pt XF19 +1pt XF4. “Be careful with XF4 as even a little too much will throw this colour far too green. Err on the light side.”
  • 33 (Blue-Grey)
  • 34 (Slate)
    • 1prt XF24 + 1 prt XF4. “This is a fraction dark compared to the standard but a touch of white or light grey will tone it down.”
  • 44 (Terracotta)
  • 46 (Red Oxide)
  • 49 (Light Purple Brown)
  • 61 (Light Stone)
    • 7 pts XF2 + 2 pts XF59 + 2 pts XF3
  • 62 (Middle Stone)
  • 63 (Dark Stone)
  • 64 (Portland Stone)
    • 6 pts XF2 + 1 pt XF3 + 1 pt XF57. “It could stand a fraction more XF2 and perhaps a fraction less XF57”

SCC (Standard Camouflage Colours)

  • 1A (Dark Brown)
  • 2 (Brown)
    • 7 pts XF10 + 2 pts XF1. “This is very close to the standard so a small touch of mid grey is needed for your models.”
  • 4 (“Cup of Tea”)
  • 7 (Warm Green)
    • 1pt XF62 + 1pt XF67 + 1pt XF3.  “A tweak more XF3 is not bad.”
  • 13 (Jungle Green)
    • 2 pts XF51 + 1 pt XF61 + 1 pt XF3
  • 14 (Blue-Black/Charcoal)
  • 15 (Olive Drab)
    • 5pts XF61 + 2pts XF62 + 2pts XF3. “This is fraction darker than the standard so a wee touch more XF3 won’t hurt. Then allow for scale effect.”
  • 16 (Very dark olive drab)

Theatre Colours

  • Desert Pink ZI
    • 5pts XF2 + 5pts XF15 + 1 prt XF52. “Be careful with XF52 as too much will turn your resulting colour too mauve. Desert Pink needs of a definite pale pink appearance. The mix may benefit from a touch more white.”
  • Dark (Olive) Green PFI
  • Light Mud
    • 4pts XF55 + 2pts XF49 + 1pt XF66.

Other Colours

  • Khaki Green G3
    • 3 pts XF62 + 2 pts XF59
  • Dark green G4
    • 3 x XF61 + 2 pts XF58
  • US Army Olive Drab No.9
  • Dark Tarmac
    • 1prt XF24 + 1prt XF69
